Disclosure: We’re the team behind Kaizen Daytrading and we build order flow indicators for NinjaTrader 8. This guide is about the data underneath those tools, which matters whichever indicators you end up using. Prices and platform terms were accurate at time of writing — verify current rates with NinjaTrader and your data provider.

Most “my footprint chart is broken” problems are not indicator problems. They are data problems. Order flow tools do something ordinary indicators never do: they look inside each candle and classify every single trade as aggressive buying or aggressive selling. That only works if your data feed tells NinjaTrader what the bid and ask were at the moment each trade printed — and a surprising number of otherwise excellent feeds simply do not.

Short answer: you need a feed that streams real-time Level 1 ticks with bid/ask state, stores historical bid/ask timestamped ticks for backfill, and supports NinjaTrader’s Tick Replay. NinjaTrader Brokerage, Tradovate, CQG, Rithmic, Kinetick real-time and IQFeed all qualify. Interactive Brokers and Barchart do not. The cheapest working live setup runs about $4/month, and practising with Market Replay costs nothing.

What NinjaTrader 8 Needs to Draw a Footprint

Three components, and you need all three.

Real-time Level 1 with bid/ask state

Trades have to arrive tick by tick, each one paired with the top-of-book bid and ask at the moment it executed. That pairing is the whole game: it is what lets NinjaTrader decide whether a trade lifted the offer (a buyer consuming liquidity) or hit the bid (a seller consuming liquidity). Without it there is no delta, no imbalance, no footprint — just volume with no direction attached.

Note what this does not require: Level 2 market depth. Top-of-book is enough, provided the quotes come attached to the trades.

Historical bid/ask timestamped ticks

Every time you open a chart or change a timeframe, NinjaTrader backfills the history. To rebuild historical volumetric bars it needs the archived ticks and the quote states that went with them.

This is where feeds quietly fail. A vendor can store a perfectly complete tick history — every trade, every price, every size — and still be useless for order flow, because it never recorded what the bid and ask were at each of those moments. You open the chart, live bars build fine, and everything before you opened it is blank.

Tick Replay

Order Flow+ studies spin up their own internal 1-tick data series automatically when a chart loads. Anything else — automated strategies, backtests, third-party indicators — needs NinjaTrader’s Tick Replay enabled so it can reprocess the historical tick queue in sequence.

Why “Estimated” Delta Gets Absorption Backwards

When historical quote states are missing, NinjaTrader does not simply give up. It falls back to UpDownTick classification, which infers the aggressor from whether price ticked up or down relative to the previous trade. That sounds reasonable and it is quietly disastrous.

Picture a market grinding sideways at a level while a large passive buyer absorbs wave after wave of aggressive selling. The bid does not move, because it is being defended. Under BidAsk logic those trades are correctly recorded as aggressive selling into absorption — one of the highest-value reads in order flow. Under UpDownTick logic, price did not fall, so the same trades get booked as neutral or even buying.

Your cumulative delta is then wrong exactly where you most needed it to be right. Divergence signals built on that series are noise.

Time-aggregated data has a related problem. An OHLC candle cannot tell you whether heavy aggressive buying happened at the top of the bar (exhaustion) or at the bottom (absorption) — the sequence inside the bar is gone. Minute-sampling also splits single large executions across arbitrary boundaries, which wrecks large-trade detection.

The ones that work

NinjaTrader Brokerage, Tradovate and Continuum. These are the native clearing feeds. They deliver unfiltered real-time ticks plus complete historical bid/ask tick archives, and they hand off to NinjaTrader’s volumetric rendering without any manual configuration. For most traders this is simply the right answer.

Rithmic and CQG. Direct-access institutional feeds built for low-latency routing. Both maintain historical tick databases with quote states, so they are fully compatible with Order Flow+ and Tick Replay. Rithmic carries roughly a $25/month connection fee plus per-contract routing surcharges.

Kinetick real-time. NinjaTrader’s preferred third-party data service, running on DTN/IQFeed infrastructure. Around $60/month for unfiltered streaming ticks, historical bid/ask backfill and Tick Replay support. The natural pick when you need order flow data separate from your broker.

IQFeed. Technically excellent — uncompressed unfiltered ticks and deep historical archives with explicit quote records. The cost structure ($108.15 core plus $24.87 for real-time futures, plus a setup fee) puts it in institutional territory.

The ones that do not

Interactive Brokers. IBKR is a fine broker and NinjaTrader connects to it for execution, but its market data architecture streams rate-limited snapshots rather than uncompressed tick queues, and it does not provide historical bid/ask tick backfill inside NinjaTrader 8. Open a volumetric chart on a native IBKR feed and the historical bars come back empty.

If you want to trade through IBKR and see footprint charts, run a dual connection: route orders to IBKR, and take your order flow data from Kinetick real-time or Rithmic. This works, and it is the standard workaround.

Barchart. Supplies real-time data and historical minute aggregates, but not historical bid/ask stamped ticks. Historical volumetric bars and BidAsk cumulative delta will not render correctly.

Kinetick free (end-of-day). Delayed daily closes for daily charts. There is no intraday tick data at all, so no order flow of any kind. It is genuinely useful for what it is — it is just not this.

Which Brokers You Can Trade Through

  • NinjaTrader Brokerage — the native clearing firm, running on NinjaTrader Clearing and Tradovate FCM infrastructure with Continuum/CQG routing. Raw tick execution feeds, full historical bid/ask data, no additional platform connection fee.
  • Tradovate — a NinjaTrader Group subsidiary, connected through integrated adapters, with full Level 1 and Level 2 order flow compatibility across desktop, web and mobile.
  • Interactive Brokers — supported for execution through the desktop connection adapter, with the data caveat above.
  • Independent clearing FCMs such as Dorman Trading or Phillip Capital — connect through the CQG or Rithmic adapters and deliver unfiltered order flow data.

One cost to know about: connecting NinjaTrader to a third-party broker (Interactive Brokers, Schwab, FXCM, FOREX.com, cTrader) requires NinjaTrader’s Multiple Broker Add-on at $99/month, billed on a rolling 30-day cycle and separate from data and commissions. It works on NinjaTrader Desktop only. The exception: Lifetime license keys purchased before March 4, 2023 have multi-broker enabled permanently at no charge. Lifetime plans bought after that date do not.

Exchange Data Fees

Your feed vendor is only half the bill. CME Group charges pass-through fees for real-time futures data across CME, CBOT, NYMEX and COMEX.

Subscription scopeNon-pro Level 1Non-pro Level 2Professional
Single exchange$4/month$16/month$156/month per exchange
All four exchanges$12/month$48/month$624/month

The mistake that costs the most money

Footprint charts, cumulative delta and VWAP only need Level 1. They calculate from executed trades paired with top-of-book quotes. As long as your feed delivers tick-by-tick trades with bid/ask state attached, $4/month covers you.

Level 2 market depth is only required for the static and dynamic SuperDOM, the Market Depth Map, and full order book profile displays. If you do not actually watch a depth ladder, you are paying $48/month for a data stream you never render.

Professional or non-professional?

Non-professional rates require that you trade strictly your own capital for your own account. You cannot be registered or qualified with the SEC, CFTC, NFA or an equivalent regulator, work as an investment adviser or fund manager, or trade on behalf of a business. Fail any of those and you are Professional, at $156 per exchange per month.

How Order Flow+ Access Actually Works

NinjaTrader’s own Order Flow+ suite includes volumetric bars, cumulative delta, a volume profile indicator and drawing tool, Order Flow VWAP, a Market Depth Map and a Trade Detector. There are four ways to get it:

  1. Lifetime license — $1,499 one-time (or four monthly payments of $499). Permanent access to all Order Flow+ tools, plus the lowest commission tier.
  2. Fund a live NinjaTrader Brokerage account. Adding funds unlocks the Order Flow+ suite automatically on any plan, including the free one, at no software cost.
  3. Fund a Tradovate account. Unlocks Order Flow+ across desktop, web and mobile.
  4. Standalone add-on — $59/month. For unfunded accounts, practice accounts without a live balance, or legacy configurations.
Free planMonthly planLifetime

If you are going to fund an account anyway, funding it is strictly cheaper than the $59/month add-on. The add-on exists for people who are not funding.

The Cheapest Setups That Work

Live trading: about $4/month

  • NinjaTrader Free plan — $0 platform fee.
  • Fund a live NinjaTrader Brokerage account — unlocks Order Flow+ at no software cost.
  • Route natively through NinjaTrader Brokerage or Tradovate — no multi-broker add-on.
  • CME non-professional Level 1, single exchange — $4/month. For E-mini and Micro S&P 500 or Nasdaq contracts, that is the CME exchange alone.

Total baseline: $4/month, plus per-contract commissions, exchange and clearing fees when you trade. Step up to Level 2 at $16/month only if you need depth displays.

The catch to watch: the Free plan carries a $35/month inactivity fee if you log into the live environment and execute no live trade within 30 days (accounts established before June 20, 2025 are assessed $25). Replay and simulation trades do not satisfy it.

Practice and backtesting: $0

You do not need a funded account, a data subscription or any capital at all to learn to read order flow.

Install NinjaTrader 8 Desktop, create a free account, and connect using the Market Replay (Playback) connection. Download recorded replay data through the Control Center under Tools → Historical Data → Get Market Replay Data. Those files contain millisecond tick data with Level 1 and Level 2 quote states, which is exactly why footprint bars, cumulative delta, Order Flow VWAP and volume profiles all render natively during playback. You can trade against it in simulation at variable playback speed.

Recurring cost: nothing.

The one friction point is that the Control Center downloads replay files a single day at a time, which is tedious once you want a few months of history. We built a free Bulk Replay Downloader to fetch them in batches — no purchase required.

Putting It Together

If you are starting out: NinjaTrader Free plan, Market Replay, zero cost. Learn to read the tape before you spend anything.

If you are trading live and want the lowest cost: NinjaTrader Free plan, funded NinjaTrader Brokerage account, native routing, CME non-pro Level 1 at $4/month.

If you trade enough volume for commissions to matter: run the Lifetime license math. At $0.09 versus $0.39 per micro side, the $1,499 pays for itself somewhere around 5,000 round turns — and Order Flow+ comes with it permanently.

If you are committed to another broker: keep execution where it is and add Kinetick real-time or Rithmic as a dedicated order flow data connection.

Once the data underneath is correct, the indicators on top can actually do their job. Our Footprint adds diagonal imbalance detection, stacked zone projection and unfinished business tracking on top of what Order Flow+ gives you, and CVD and Volume Profile extend the built-in versions. But all of them — ours and NinjaTrader’s — are only as good as the bid/ask ticks feeding them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which data feeds work for order flow on NinjaTrader 8?

NinjaTrader Brokerage (Continuum), Tradovate, CQG, Rithmic, Kinetick real-time and IQFeed all deliver the real-time Level 1 ticks with bid/ask state and the historical bid/ask timestamped ticks that volumetric bars and cumulative delta require. Interactive Brokers, Barchart and the free Kinetick end-of-day service do not.

Why is my NinjaTrader footprint chart blank?

Almost always the data, not the indicator. When you open a chart NinjaTrader backfills history, and if your provider stored ticks without the bid/ask quote states that went with them, historical volumetric bars cannot be reconstructed and load empty. Interactive Brokers and Barchart are the two common feeds where this happens. Live bars may still build correctly, which is what makes it confusing.

How much does market data cost for order flow on NinjaTrader 8?

CME Group non-professional Level 1 data costs $4/month for a single exchange or $12/month for all four. Level 2 market depth costs $16 and $48 respectively. Professional subscribers pay $156 per exchange per month. Footprint charts, cumulative delta and VWAP only need Level 1.

Do I need Level 2 data for footprint charts?

No. Footprint charts, cumulative delta and Order Flow VWAP work on Level 1 as long as the feed delivers tick-by-tick trades with bid/ask state attached. Level 2 depth is only needed for the SuperDOM, Market Depth Map and full order book displays.

How do I get NinjaTrader Order Flow+?

Four ways: included permanently with a Lifetime license ($1,499 one-time); unlocked by funding a live NinjaTrader Brokerage account on any plan including the free one; unlocked by a funded Tradovate account across desktop, web and mobile; or as a standalone $59/month add-on for unfunded and practice accounts.

Can I practise order flow trading on NinjaTrader for free?

Yes. Market Replay replays recorded tick data including bid/ask quote states, so footprint bars, cumulative delta, Order Flow VWAP and volume profiles render natively during playback, and you can place simulated trades against it. No platform fee, no data subscription, no funded account.

Can I use Interactive Brokers for footprint charts on NinjaTrader?

Not on IBKR’s native data. NinjaTrader connects to IBKR for execution, but IBKR does not supply historical bid/ask tick data inside NinjaTrader 8, so historical footprint bars load blank. The workaround is a dual connection: route orders through IBKR and take order flow data from Kinetick real-time or Rithmic. Note that third-party broker connections also require NinjaTrader’s $99/month Multiple Broker Add-on unless you hold a pre-March-2023 Lifetime license.
